Nature’s Eight-Armed Oddity
Octopuses are already famous for their intelligence, camouflage abilities, and flexible bodies. However, one of their strangest features is that they possess three hearts instead of one.
Two of the hearts pump blood to the gills, where oxygen is collected. The third heart circulates oxygen-rich blood throughout the rest of the body. Even more unusual, the main heart temporarily stops beating whenever the octopus swims.
This unique biology helps explain why octopuses often prefer crawling along the ocean floor rather than swimming for long distances. Their remarkable anatomy makes them some of the most fascinating creatures in the animal kingdom.
